You don’t need a cape to be a superhero! When you join a Heart Walk, you become a part of saving lives – you become a Heart Walk hero. At the Greater Northern New Jersey Heart Walk, we will be creating healthier communities and supporting lifesaving research simply by walking! The Walk will be held on October 21 at the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ.
Small steps—both the kind we take and the kind we make—lead to big gains. By walking, you help to support critical research, education and patient services. All of which can make a huge impact, especially to survivors like Kate Edmondson.
Kate was born with a congenital heart defect called tetralogy of Fallot. At 18 months old, she had a stent inserted into her pulmonary valve via open-heart surgery. For 17 years, Kate didn’t let the scar or the follow up doctor’s appointments stop her from being an active, healthy and wild child!
When Kate went to college, she trained hard and joined the rowing team. As the semester progressed, Kate was slowing down on the team and discovered she needed to have her pulmonary valve replaced. Her second and final open-heart surgery was performed on May 11, 2016. The pulmonary valve will need to be replaced again, but thanks to advancements in research, it can be done by a catheter instead of open heart surgery.
Kate has never let her heart defect stop her from being her best and doing her best. At the Greater Northern New Jersey Heart Walk, she will be walking for herself and for survivors like her.
Walk for survivors like Kate and walk for yourself! Be Healthy for Good – Eat Smart, Add Color, Move More and Be Well. Healthy for Good is a revolutionary movement to inspire you to create lasting change in your health and your life, one small step at a time. Simple lifestyle changes, such as eating healthy and walking 30 minutes every day, promote heart and brain health.
